Deacons likewise must be men of dignity, not double-tongued, or addicted to much wine or fond of sordid gain, but holding to the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience. (1Timothy 3:8-9)
When the Apostles established the office of deacon to dispel rumors of favoritism on their part, the duties dealt with equality of distribution of the community's assets. Money handling was involved as it has always been in such matters.
Today usual deacon duties involve collecting and distributing the tithes and offerings of the congregants. There would be the temptation for personal gain. Honesty and integrity are at risk. The men selected must be trustworthy in such matters. Too many have fallen.
