1 Timothy 4:1-3 But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons, 2by means of the hypocrisy of liars seared in their own conscience as with a branding iron, 3men who forbid marriage and advocate abstaining from foods which God has created to be gratefully shared in by those who believe and know the truth.
Paul predicts through the Spirit a truth that likely had some immediate fulfillment in his day, certainly has been fulfilled many time over in history, and will continue as long as the Lord tarries. People renounce and leave the Christian faith daily because of their own deceitful hearts and willingness to listen to lies – looking for "something better" in this life while ignoring the promises of God for an eternal life of bliss with Him.
I know it happens every day but it still surprises me that people will believe someone else and not trust God. A man says "do this" or "don't" and his word is taken over God's.
So the verse is an encouragement and challenge to Christians to keep to truth, preach the whole counsel of God, and remain firm in the faith. I pray for you, dear reader, in this regard.
This I also know… if there ever was a moment of trust in Christ, then we will see those deceived in glory; but if their faith was just religion and not relational, they will suffer with the other unbelievers
