Train up a child in the way he should go,
Even when he is old he will not depart from it.
— Proverbs 22:6, NASB
Parents are responsible for training their child. Many commentators
on this verse miss its point, however. I agree that it promotes leading children
in religious instruction so the get to know God intimately. But look at the
singularity of the statement. Each child is different, uniquely created by God.
To attempt to teach the truth to each one using a standard method does not meet
the requirement to teach him “in the way he
should go” – individualized instruction so he grows to who God mad him to be.
Later (v.15) we learn that the training will include love and instruction as
well as “the rod of discipline.”
