Pillar and Support

1Ti 3:14-15 I am writing these things to you, hoping to come to you before long; but in case I am delayed, I write so that you will know how one ought to conduct himself in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and support of the truth.

It would certainly appear that Paul would have preferred to have instructed Timothy personally, but being uncertain as to how long it might be before the opportunity presented itself he thought it best to write now, speak again later.

What impresses me with this time reading the verse (a Holy Spirit moment) is the way the church (people not building) is described. Collectively the believers are "the pillar and support of the truth." This is a timely truth.

Recently a man was invited to speak on a selection of given topics for about 10 minutes to lead into a ministry opportunity presentation. I was had. He chose to teach a false doctrine and misused Scripture to prove his point. I was proud of my congregation in their responses. No one challenged him publicly it would have been rude and as I now know more it would have likely not been fruitful.

Instead after he was gone the questions came to me from all quarters and no one believed what he had said to be true. They all were pillars in attitude and supporters in discernment of the truth.

I took the first opportunity to try to correct him and seek an apology for abusing the opportunity. He has not responded to teaching or rebuking. Pray for Bob, please; and be "the pillar and support of truth."
